Background | Center for Biblical Studies |
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, and last book of the Pentateuch. It is a record of Moses’ last words before his death. The title Deuteronomy means “second law,” because here, at the end of Israel’s desert wanderings, Moses gives the law again to a generation not alive forty years earlier (when they were first given on Mt. Sinai).
Most of the book consists of a series of speeches given by Moses. The first verses of the book set up Moses’ speeches, and the final chapter (34) records his death. After recounting some of their desert woes (chapters 1-4), Moses drives home the necessity of absolute allegiance to God (chapters 4-11). It is in this section, in 6:4-5, that we find one of the most famous verses in the Old Testament, known in Hebrew as the shema, which means “hear”: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” These same words are also found on Jesus’ lips in the Gospels. (See Matthew 23:37Mark 12:30, and Luke 10:27)  More - Click here

Collect of the Day: The Third Sunday in Lent
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
For Mission
Almighty and everlasting God,
by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people
is governed and sanctified:
Receive our supplications and prayers
which we offer before you for
all members of your holy Church,
that in their vocation and ministry
they may truly and devoutly serve you;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
