Day 90 - Tuesday of Holy Week
Read | Tuesday | March 31 | Judges 1:1 – 3:30
Date | From the Conquest to the Kings, the period of the Judges extends some 200 to 300 years.
Background | Book of Judges | Judges is the seventh book of the Old Testament, and it tells story of the time from Joshua’s death to the beginning of Israel monarchy under Saul. During that time “judges” ruled Israel. Contrary to what a modern reader might expect from their title, these judges were not settlers of legal disputes but warrior kings. After Joshua’s conquest had ended, these judges continued to lead Israel to their complete possession of the land. Ultimately, Israel’s judges were acting on behalf of Yahweh, Israel’s true judge and deliverer (Judges 11:27). More - Click here from the Center of Biblical Studies.
Reading | Judah chosen by God to defeat the Canaanites and Perizzites; some failures in driving the enemy out of the land; angel shows up - why have you disobeyed the Lord? Israelites wept and made sacrifice to the Lord; Joshua dies at 110 years; the next generation did not know God and disobeyed the covenant; the hand of the Lord was against them; then God raised up judges to save the people; the people returned to the ways of their ancestors; people forgot God and worship foreign gods; God was made and let them be conquered; Othniel becomes judge and returned the land; another cycle of forgetting God, doing evil, and another judge - Ehud - was raised up to bring the people back to God, kills the king and conquers the land of Moab.

Collect of the Day: Tuesday in Holy Week
O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life: Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
For Mission
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
