Thursday after the First Sunday in Lent

Opening Sentence

Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

Read Today

Ps. 50; Ps. [59 60] or 19 46; Gen. 39:1–23; 1 Cor. 2:14—3:15; Mark 2:1–12

Psalm 50
Listen to the Lord; do not sin as the world sins; bow down and hear the Lord.

Genesis 39
Joseph is a good looking man and the Lord is with him; he is taken as a slave a house of an Egyptian; the wife of the house lusts after him and asks for sex; he runs off; she lies to her husband; Joseph ends up in jail. The Lord continues to be with him.

1 Corinthians 2
14 Those who are unspiritual[a] do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are discerned spiritually. 15 Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny.
16 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?’
But we have the mind of Christ.
Do not be divided in Church. We are all Christ's and Christ alone.
Mark 2
Friends knowing Jesus heals overcomes the crowd in the house, removes the roof and lowers a paralytic to Jesus; Jesus forgives his sin; Pharisees mutter about blasphemy; Jesus heals

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
