Ps. 72; 1 Samuel 1:1–20; Hebrews 3:1–6; Ps. 146 147; John 3:25–30

Psalm 72
A prayer that the king will prosper and extend God's rule to all of the lands; a royal psalm; May he rule with God's justice; be with the poor; live long; may all the kings fall down before him; for he delivers to the needy; may his name endure forever

1 Samuel 1
First and Second Samuel were originally one work; probably written right after the Babylonian Exile as part of the Deuteronomist history; falls into three parts = Samuel is prophet, priest, and judge; Saul is the first king; David is the main hero; very literary written; Hannah weeps to the high priest Eli for lack of a child; she conceived and bore a son she named Samuel - I have asked him of the Lord.

Hebrews 3
Paul compares Moses and Jesus; Moses the obedient servant and Jesus the obedient Son.

John 3
John the Baptist is asked by his disciples if he is the Messiah and he says again that he is not; he is the best man but not the groom for he must increase and I must decrease.

Prayer -

General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
