Today’s Reading

3/20/2019     Day 79 1 Kings 1:1 – 4:34

Reflection:

Background by Center of Biblical Studies. Background by
Chabad.org
1 & 2 Kings were artificially divided with the LXX and should be
read as one book.

David dies, Solomon eliminates the competition; and begins the
Golden Age of Israel. Some scholars debate the gloriousness of the
Solomonic Kingdom.
The Deuteronomic historian, or D, may have written this along with the
Book of Deuteronomy around 622 bce during the reign of Josiah and
the first reformation of the faith. This has a slant to favor the Judah
Kings and not the Israel Kings during the divided kingdom.
The story of Solomon can be divided into three parts:
  • Chapters 1-2 - Solomons rise to power
  • Vs 3:1 - 9:9 - Solomon forward thinking
  • 9:10 - 11:43 - Solomon gets negative review because of the forced labor (slavery) of the people.

Meditation/Contemplate:

1 Kings 2:3 - Biblegateway.com - NOAB - Anglicised

“...keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in God’s ways and
keeping God’s statutes, God’s commandments, God’s ordinances, and
God’s testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, so that you may
prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.”
Prayer:
O God, let me keep your ways.  Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and
forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and
contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and
acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all
mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen. (BCP)
