Today’s Reading

3/22/2019     Day 81 1 Kings 9:1 – 11:43

Reflection:

Background by Center of Biblical Studies. Background by
Chabad.org
1 & 2 Kings were artificially divided with the LXX and should be
read as one book.
The story of Solomon can be divided into three parts:
  • Chapters 1-2 - Solomons rise to power
  • Vs 3:1 - 9:9 - Solomon forward thinking
  • 9:10 - 11:43 - Solomon gets negative review because of the forced labor (slavery) of the people.
NOAB5 & Collins Introduction (see Source page)

enforced labor of 200K plus. S had 550 chiefs over the people. S buiit
fleets for commerce, took in 600 talents of gold, 1000 wives and
comubines, 1400 chariots, 12K horses. But with S foreign wives -
He worshiped foreign gods which made God mad and created wars
against him; three rebellions; Son Rehoboam takes over after S dies.
Meditation/Contemplate:

How easy is it lose sight of the work of God in our lives.
Prayer:
O God, dwell with me in my places that I roam and walk with me.
Amen.

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help
ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our
souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen
to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the
soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP)

  1. From MSN Money -
King Solomon of Israel – peak net worth: $2.2 trillion
According to the Bible, King Solomon ruled from 970 BC to 931 BC, and during this time he is said to have received 25 tons of gold for each of the 39 years of his reign, which would be worth billions of dollars in 2016. Along with impossible riches amassed from taxation and trade, the biblical ruler's personal fortune could have surpassed $2 trillion in today's money.
