Background |

More background by My Jewish Learning.
Jonah or Jonas[a] is the name given in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh/Old
Testament
) to a prophet of the northern kingdom of Israel in about the
8th century BCE. He is the eponymous central figure of the Book of
Jonah
, in which he is called upon by God to travel to Nineveh and warn
its residents of impending divine wrath. After rejecting the call, Jonah
successfully convinces the entire city of Nineveh to repent, but waits
outside the city in expectation of its destruction. God shields Jonah
from the sun with a plant, but later sends a worm to cause it to wither.
When Jonah complains of the bitter heat, God rebukes him.

A Prayer Attributed to St. Francis
Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
