Today’s Reading -

10/12/2019     Day 285  John 1:1 – 2:12
10/13/2019     Day 286 John 2:13 – 3:36

Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 1 - Before the cosmos, there was the λόγος and
the logos was with and was God. And the λόγος became
flesh and lived among us as grace upon grace.
At a particular point in time of all time, there was John who
came and testified to the λόγος.  He was not the λόγος but
the one chosen in all creation to introduce the logos.
John’s ministry was one of the proclamation and baptism
of repentance. Jesus was baptized by John and the glory
of God shown - the Holy Spirit - in the form of a dove.
Jesus gathers his disciples and begins his ministry. “Come
and See”.
Chapter 2 - Jesus and the boys go with J’s mother to a banquet
that runs out of wine. Note the conversation between J and his
Mother. Jesus then goes to Jerusalem and cleans out the Temple.
Chapter 3 - Jesus encounters a Pharisee named Nicodemus in
the dark of night where Jesus explains about being reborn of water
and the Spirit. God so loved the world that He gave his Son not
to condemn but to have forgiveness and eternal life.
John’s disciples are concerned that Jesus is baptizing also. John
says he is not the Messiah. He is the one who came down from
Heaven.

More Gospel of John by Mark Powell
Because John is so different from the other gospel,
there is much debate among scholars about the how
of the writing of John.
Some say it was written between 90 - 140 c.e. Others
toward the end of the century of the 100s.
Some say it was written by John the Elder and others
say it was a document written by a community over a
period of time - 50 - 100 years.

The community of the beloved disciples seems to have
been followers of Jesus, separated from the world, and
looking continually to a Jesus of the cosmos that came
down from heaven and now rules the universe.
Clement of Alexander said that John wrote a spiritual
Gospel.
The gospel of John is different.  Look at how Jesus is
described differently from the other gospels.

Pray

Collect of the Day: Pentecost, proper 23
Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede
and follow us, that we may continually be given to
good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.
