Today’s Reading -

10/14/2019     Day 287 John 4:1 -54
10/15/2019     Day 288 John 5:1 – 6:21

Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 4 - J’s encounter with the Samaritan woman breaks
barriers in so many ways - Jesus talks with a woman; Jesus
talks with a Samaritan woman which Jews don’t speak to
Samaritans; then gets into a cryptic the difference of water -
Jesus is the living water of salvation to all and this woman
(and everyone else) does not realize who she is talking to.
J reveals her background which she is not proud of but
at that moment Jesus turns her into an evangelist to a
differently believing community to come and see this one
called Jesus. The disciples are stunned that Jesus is talking
to this woman. WE have heard for ourselves about Jesus.
Jesus is asked to heal and does so instantly by just his word.
Chapter 5 - Jesus causes a controversy about healing on the
Sabbath and defends himself concerning his authority and
uses scriptures to prove his point. My works prove who I am.
Chapter 6 - Jesus teaching amasses 5000 listeners and no one
thought of the logistics of having so many people and no food.
Jesus creates a miracle from the giving of food of a boy with his
lunch. And all were satisfied and there were leftovers. Jesus
escapes from that place before they (the crowd) crown him as
leader. They did not know the kind of leader he was.
The next day Jesus declares he is the bread that comes down
from heaven. He is the manna in this wilderness.; most just
do not understand; Jesus asks his disciples if they want to
stick around? Peter - You have the words of eternal life.

More Gospel of John by Mark Powell
Because John is so different from the other gospel,
there is much debate among scholars about the how
of the writing of John.
Some say it was written between 90 - 140 c.e. Others
toward the end of the century of the 100s.
Some say it was written by John the Elder and others
say it was a document written by a community over a
period of time - 50 - 100 years.

The community of the beloved disciples seems to have
been followers of Jesus, separated from the world, and
looking continually to a Jesus of the cosmos that came
down from heaven and now rules the universe.
Clement of Alexander said that John wrote a spiritual
Gospel.
The gospel of John is different.  Look at how Jesus is
described differently from the other gospels.

Pray

Collect of the Day: Pentecost, proper 23
Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede
and follow us, that we may continually be given to
good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.
