Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 13 - Barnabas and Paul are set apart for missionary
work - They started their teaching in synagogues and then
to others. (Saul is also known as Paul) . First missionary journey
through modern-day Turkey, Cyprus, and Syria (Antioch). Paul
preaches using the salvation history of the law and prophets
to point to Jesus. The preaching is rejected by Jews to the delight
of non-Jewish (Gentiles).
Chapter 14 - B & P run into the same problem - told the good news -
some Jews and Gentiles accepted - other created problems for them.
They heal a person and are treated like Greek gods and offered
sacrifices; the gang from Antioch came their and raised problems.
B & P revisit some churches and continued on their journey,
Chapter 15 - The question is - Is Christianity a sect of Judaism or a new
movement? The first Church Council met and decided that the Gentiles
not follow Jewish religious restrictions.
Chapter 16 - Paul and Barnabas separate to do their ministry. Paul
revisits existing churches; then moves onto new territory. See map
above. Asia minor, Troas, Philippi. They are arrested for restraint of
trade - earthquake - Paul says to jailers everyone is still there - They
invoke their Roman citizenship and are escorted out of town.
Chapter 17 - Thessalonica- Tell the story - cause a riot - leave the city.
Athens - Asked to speak at their civic center - Paul - for the unknown
God - preaches of Jesus - the God who is known. Some believed -others
did not.
Chapter 18 - Corinth - preached - arrested - flogged - released because
what they were not illegal. Part of the third missionary journey.
Chapter 19 - Ephesus - Paul tells them of the Holy Spirit and
they received the Spirit; Paul and the disciples leave the synagogue
and begin teaching - was there for two years - miracles and
wonders happened. They leave there to go to Macedonia and then
to Ephesians. A dispute happen due to the number of people going
into the faith and effecting the Artemis religion economy.
Chapter 20 - Paul leaves for Greece - grammar tense is now “WE”;
Meets with the Ephesus church leaders and tells them goodbye and
there were many tears.

Background |
Background by the Center of Biblical Studies.
More The Acts of the Apostles by Mark Powell
The Book of the Acts of the Apostle is Luke volume 2.
The starting point is the Ascension of Jesus, the coming
of the Holy Spirit (which is the founding of the Church),
and Peter and Paul featured in the missionary movement
of the Church. About midway through the book, the case
changes from them to us. It is an adventure in what various
Apostles go through in getting the word out on Jesus. Based
in the Roman Empire of the middle east and west Asia and
Europe. The Church struggles to figure out what they are;
what to do with non-believers; and how to live out the
freedom of God’s grace in Jesus Christ as led by the Holy Spirit.

Loving God, dissolve the barriers of suspicion that divide
    us from one another.
Fill us with your love that casts out fear.
Clothe us in your light and grace, that we may be agents
of hope and encouragement for those that despair and
  have lost their way.
Help us each to find our own particular way in which to
proclaim the good news of your saving love in our daily
    life and work.
We pray for our government and for our leaders at every
level of authority, that they may be strengthened to heal
the structures that bruise your people.
 God, hear our prayer.

Amen

Do not be afraid, for I am your God;
