Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 21 - Paul arrives in Jerusalem in a roundabout way
and is asked to observe the rite of purification and tells the
disciples stories of the missionary journey and thousand converted
to the faith; Jews get rilled up and begin to riot. Paul asks
the Roman officials to speak with the crowd.
Chapter 22 - Paul speaks of his conversion and his encounter with
Jesus and his blindness and healing; then his missionary journey
to the Gentiles which stirred up the crowd again; Paul is flogged and
then reveals that he is a Roman citizen - the cohort was afraid for
they had bound a citizen. The tribune the next day assembles all
parties.
Chapter 23 - Paul speaks and divides the crowd of leaders between
those who believed in the resurrection [Pharisees] and those that did
not [Sadducees]. This caused another riot that the Romans stopped.
A plot develops where Paul was to be assassinated. Paul and the
disciples hear of it and reported it to the Roman officials. The officials
have 200 soldiers escort Paul to Caesarea. Felix the governor receives
a letter explaining what is going on. Paul is ordered to Herod’s HQ.
Chapter 24 - Paul is brought to trial and gives his defense refuting what
the Jewish leaders charge him. Felix sent everyone away and called Paul
back daily anticipating getting paid a bribe. Paul was left in prison for 2
years.
Chapter 25 - Festus takes over Roman leadership and Paul’s case is
Reviewed. Festus asks if Paul wants to be tried in a Jewish court and
Paul appeals to Caesar and that is where Festus sends him. Some
Visiting leaders arrive and Festus has them talk with Paul to figure
out what to charge him with.
Chapter 26 - Paul states his case before King Agrippa. He retells his
conversion story. Festus does not get it. Agrippa and Festus confer
saying Paul would have been set free if he had not appealed to the
Emperor.
Chapter 27 - Paul was placed on a ship to Italy. They were shipwrecked
in Crete and then set off to Malta after the winter.
Chapter 28 - In Malta, Paul was bitten by a viper and did not die, he
heals a leading island man which sparked a vast group who was healed.
They were there for three months, they were well provisioned and sent
on their way to Rome. He has another trial but there is no evidence
except Paul’s telling of the gospel story. The story concludes with Paul
staying under house arrest for two years teaching about Jesus Christ
with boldness and without hindrance.
Death of Paul - The date of Paul's death is believed to have occurred after the Great Fire of Rome in July 64, but before the last year of Nero's reign, in 68. According to several Church Fathers and apocryphal books, Paul was beheaded in Rome by orders of Nero.   Wikipedia

More The Acts of the Apostles by Mark Powell
The Book of the Acts of the Apostle is Luke volume 2.
The starting point is the Ascension of Jesus, the coming
of the Holy Spirit (which is the founding of the Church),
and Peter and Paul featured in the missionary movement
of the Church. About midway through the book, the case
changes from them to us. It is an adventure in what various
Apostles go through in getting the word out on Jesus. Based
in the Roman Empire of the middle east and west Asia and
Europe. The Church struggles to figure out what they are;
what to do with non-believers; and how to live out the
freedom of God’s grace in Jesus Christ as led by the Holy Spirit.

Loving God, dissolve the barriers of suspicion that divide
    us from one another.
Fill us with your love that casts out fear.
Clothe us in your light and grace, that we may be agents
of hope and encouragement for those that despair and
  have lost their way.
Help us each to find our own particular way in which to
proclaim the good news of your saving love in our daily
    life and work.
We pray for our government and for our leaders at every
level of authority, that they may be strengthened to heal
the structures that bruise your people.
 God, hear our prayer.

Amen
