Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down
righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may spring up,
and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also.
Isaiah 45:8, NRSV (Enriching Our Worship 1)

Today’s Reading -
12/13/2019     Day 347 James 1:1 – 2:26
12/14/2019     Day 348 James 3:1 – 5:20

Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 1 - The audience is the Christian Community that is
dispersed around the world. If you don’t know what to do - ask
God. Endure temptation, every gift is from God, be quick to
listen, slow to speak and slow to anger.
Be doers of the Word
just not hearers. Bridle your tongue. Have faith untainted and
remembering the poor.

Chapter 2 - Show no favoritism; act in faith, love your neighbor
as yourself.  Can you have faith and not do works of charity?
The writers uses Abraham and Rahad as examples.

Chapter 3 - Teachers will be held accountable for what they
teach about the faith. The tongue can be used for good or
evil. Put away all things that are negative and counter to the
Faith.

Chapter 4 - Why do you enter in disputes with others? Envy and
and materialism. Draw near to God and be clean. Do not speak
evil of anyone. Be humble before the Lord as you lead your life.

Chapter 5 - Be patient for the coming of the Lord. Look at
Elijah as an example and the drought and the rain. Come back
to the truth.

Background |
Background by Mark Powell - Introducing the New Testament
Not written by the half-brother of Jesus but attributed him - James
states as it thesis that faith without work of charity, care, and
Commitment is dead. Written sometime between 50 - 95 c.e.(?)

Some scholars think James has a flavor of Proverbs and is a series
of practices for the daily life of the Christian with the emphasis of helping the poor vs the rich.

Canticle 16
The Song of Zechariah - Benedictus Dominus Deus
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel,
* you have come to your people and set them free.
You have raised up for us a mighty Savior,
* born of the house of your servant David.
Through your holy prophets, you promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
* from the hands of all who hate us,
To show mercy to our forebears,
* and to remember your holy covenant.
This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham,
* to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship you without fear,
* holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
* for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
To give God’s people knowledge of salvation
* by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
* the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
* and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
