Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down
righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may spring up,
and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also.
Isaiah 45:8, NRSV (Enriching Our Worship 1)

Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 1 - a thanksgiving to God for giving us, Jesus. Rejoice no
matter the trials. You are elect and holy people in Christ. Although
We are as brief as grass, the Word of the Lord lasts forever.

Chapter 2 - Rid yourself of all evil and be nurtured as a mother to
child by what God can feed you. You have been bought and now are
Pure. You are chosen, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own
people. You were not a people but now you are God’s. Conduct yourself
honorably, be a free people, serve with deference, Jesus leads you.
Chapter 3 - Wives love, Husbands love, both as God has loved you. Be
eager to do what is good. You are blessed for suffering in doing right.
You are saved through the baptism of Jesus.

Chapter 4 - You may suffer as Christ has suffered. But you are different
now and do not act as non-believers. The end is near but you are
saved. You may suffer now, but won’t forever. You are beloved.

Chapter 5 - Peter exhorts church leaders to watch over the people as
Christ the chief shepherd of the flock. Humble yourselves to God. Stand
fast in the true faith of God. Peace.

Background |
Background by Mark Powell - Introducing the New Testament
With Nero as the Roman emperor, persecution was widespread during
the early days of the Church in the Roman empire. Peter is writing
to the churches of Asia Minor during this hard time. Images used
are baptismal. Christians are abused.

Canticle 16
The Song of Zechariah - Benedictus Dominus Deus
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel,
* you have come to your people and set them free.
You have raised up for us a mighty Savior,
* born of the house of your servant David.
Through your holy prophets, you promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
* from the hands of all who hate us,
To show mercy to our forebears,
* and to remember your holy covenant.
This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham,
* to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship you without fear,
* holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
* for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
To give God’s people knowledge of salvation
* by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
* the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
* and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
