Day 38 - 1 Thessalonians

Prayer Suggestion
|

Almighty Father, whose dear Son,
on the night before he suffered, instituted
the Sacrament of his Body and Blood:
Mercifully grant that we may receive it
thankfully in remembrance of Jesus
Christ our Lord, who in these holy
mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life;
and who now lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

My Thoughts on Today’s Session -

Using Powell.

From his point of view and other academics,
1 Thessalonians is probably the first book
of the New Testament written with Paul
as the primary author.

The person who wrote this letter is an

  • avid student of scripture

  • Law of Moses

  • Psalms of David

  • Prophet

  • Would never imagine this letter
would be part of a New Testament
    Scripture

  • Worked six days as a leatherworker
and on Sunday turned shop into a
    center of religious discourse

  • The audience is primarily non-Jewish
    people (Gentiles)

Major Themes:

  • Telling of how Paul and his companions
    did the ministry there.

    • They truly care for the Thessalonians

    • Encouraged them to lead a pure,
upright, and blameless life in Christ

    • Recap his ministry

  • Moving from an old life to new in Christ

    • Don’t be honored by the things
of this world but of the things
      and ways of God.

  • Be holy in matters of sex

  • Work of a living

    • Work with hands and be
      dependent on no one

    • Loitering for Jesus not appropriate.

  • The dead will rise on the last day (parousia)

The focus of the letter is spirituality rather
than theology and living the life in Christ
in all aspects of their lives as a congregation
and individuals in that community.

Happy Eastertide!
