Parables - The Two Debtors

Dear Friends,

Grace and peace from our loving God.

Let us pray …

O God, the giver to us of all things,

I thank you today for home, family, air,
health, less pain, reasonable weather,

the love between people, and

siblings bound together by your love.

Be with those today who have lost a loved

one or business colleague through suicide.

Be in their presence as they weep and mourn.
May they find comfort in you and move to
joy in living …

For all these things and the things you
know we need, we thank you, Eternal Giver

of Life. Amen

Today’s Parable - The Two Debtors / Luke 7:41-43

[See Snodgrass, pp. 77 - 92 and Kendall, pp. 113-
121.]

Thoughts -

As one who is blessed to carry too much debt,

these parables on debtors strike home

for me.

The context of Luke 7 where Jesus shares the story
teaching is -

  • Jesus ran into a Roman military officer who’s
    faith stuns Jesus

  •  Jesus raises a son from the dead

  • John sends two of his disciples to ask Jesus
if he is the One? Jesus points to the actions of
healing and wholeness. (He comments on
John’s ministry as the forebearer of the Gospel)

Jesus is invited to a religious leader’s home for a meal.
A woman (sinner) comes in and begins to cleanse Jesus.
Religious leaders think to themselves that Jesus is

now unclean and being touched by a woman and snicker
to themselves.

Jesus asks his host who of two debtors (one for $12,500 and the other $1,250) and are forgiven of their debt,
who would be more grateful and love the lender more?

The one is forgiven more.

Jesus then turns to the religious and their lack of action
and the sinner woman who cleanses Jesus with her

tears and hair. She is forgiven more and responds
appropriately.

Jesus points to the self-righteousness of the religious and the repenting woman seeking forgiveness. And Jesus (God) forgives her.

We are blessed, forgiven more, and can have a new life walking with Jesus.

Who have you forgiven today?

May we be blessed as we journey with the Holy Spirit.

May God be with you.

Sincerely,
